Currently Dr Galvin is a Professor of Neurology at University of Miami Miller School and Medicine and is the Founding Director of the Comprehensive Program for Brain Health and Chief of Cognitive Neurology for Palm Beach and Broward Counties.

Dr Karen Fortuna is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Dartmouth College.  She works in equal partnership with peer support specialists in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand to co-produce and empirically test digital peer support technologies and trainings.  Dr Fortuna serves on the APA’s Expert Advisory Panel on smartphone app development and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute’s (PCORI) Advisory Panel on Patient Engagement.  She also serves as editor of the Journal of Participatory Medicine.

The Aging-In-Place Hierarchy

What does aging-in-place successfully look like?  How do we measure it? 

Our ability to “age-in-place" is built from our early life experiences and maturity, not physiological needs.  If we consider the process of aging as a true physical and behavioral progression, then we must evaluate Maslow's Hierarchy of Basic Needs (which begins with the physical and is based on an individual's motivation to rise to the next stage in life).

With over 26 years of construction management experience, she is the President of JS-1 Construction, a family-owned and operated South Florida business. Jane found inspiration to reinvent her business in an unusual place.  She was helping friends who operate a nonprofit that aids people with physical disabilities. She realized that as people age, their homes need to function differently.  Homes have a life cycle.   As a homeowner, your life changes, and your home should change, too. Today Jane’s company focuses on making life easier for seniors and people with disabilities to remain in the homes they love.  As her knowledge in this area of home renovation has grown, Jane has become a consultant to businesses that are renovating or seeking to make their facilities more accessible to the public.
